The Rutland Regional Planning Commission (RRPC) is an accomplished regional planning and economic development organization, serving 27 towns in the Rutland Region of Vermont. Here I was a graphic design intern from January 2022 to May 2022, handling all their brand work and graphic needs.
Sometimes throughout my internship, individual colleagues would reach out to me with specific projects and needs in mind. The first time this occurred was with Steffanie who was requesting a map or graphic to display data for an upcoming town plan.
The main idea behind this was to take a large spreadsheet table full of data regarding which Rutland region towns were using which emergency services and dispatch services, and distill it into a more visually engaging graphic or map. Something more exciting than a table full of data. These graphics needed to be both visually interesting and highly functional, and would need to come in a series of three: One for fire, one for EMS, and one for Law Enforcement.
Following an extensive brainstorming and design session, I pitched Steffanie three different concepts for a graphic for her to choose from, each metabolizing the data in a different way:
She loved the concepts! After a long, practical discussion, she had decided that the first map/graphic was the most ideal selection for displaying her data, so that was the direction we continued to head in.
I made some data corrections, mixed up the colors, and reformatted the layout of the map graphic. I then produced two more versions for EMS and Fire and sent her the final versions with approval. These were the final result:
